This is an expanded edition of the regular Uganda Districts Information
Handbook. The handbook provides detailed information on all the 112
districts in a condensed form.
While many users found information in previous editions very useful, this
expanded edition is more comprehensive and user friendly.
In this edition, detailed colour maps have been introduced for each district.
For ease of reference, the districts have been grouped into seven regional
blocks: Northern, North-Western, North-Eastern, Eastern, Central, South-
Western and Western. A map of each one of these blocks enables the user
to understand a district in terms of its regional context showing the other
districts that border it.
In addition to location, the book gives the size of each district, administrative
divisions down to the sub-county, climate, vegetation, rainfall and relief. It
shows the lowest and highest points, including spot heights, above sea level.
The book specifies the population and separates it into male and female, and
into rural and urban dwellers. There is information about economic activities,
industry, tourist attractions and banking services. There is information about
NGOs, their numbers and field of specialisation.
The book also gives road and railway networks, airfields, radio, television
stations and telephone systems that serve each district. Tourist attractions
and information on tourist lodges that serve different national parks and
game reserves are listed.
It also lists the number of educational institutions, number of students in each
district and teachers that serve them. It gives the number of the different
grades of health centres and services available in each district plus current
HIV/AIDS prevalence rates.
Finally, there is a list of district leaders and Members of Parliament.
This book is useful to tourists, schools, district officials, councillors in the
local governments, Members of Parliament, planners, NGOs and diplomats.
