It traces the origins of the country's history from as far back as the sixteenth century when it was first settled by the present inhabitants. From these half-mythical beginnings, supported by folklore, he then goes on to make an intensive analysis of the critical period of the colonization of the country. A major proportion of the book deals with an analysis of the religiopolitical polarization which started the, a knowledge of which is crucial to an understanding of Uganda's current political setup.
